Glasgow council slams 'deplorable' vandals who trashed memorial benches during Rangers title celebrations

Glasgow City Council has condemned “deplorable” vandals who trashed memorial benches during the Rangers title celebrations last night.

George Square was left decimated after fans gathered to celebrate Rangers winning the league despite a police warning not to.

The council has since slammed the “lack of care and respect” shown by revellers after five memorial benches were destroyed.

It is now in the process of trying to repatriate plaques removed from the benches with their owners.

Writing on Twitter this afternoon, the council said: “We’ve had cleansing and parks teams in George Square since Sunday night, clearing debris and assessing the damage to furniture and plants

“The lack of care and respect shown to a place and facilities that all Glaswegians should be able to enjoy is disturbing – but destroying memorials placed by grieving families and friends is, frankly, deplorable.

“We believe we have been able to recover any memorial plaques from smashed benches and are now starting the job of contacting families, where we are able.

“The memorials will be restored; however it is not yet known how much this will cost.”

The revelation sparked anger among social media users.

One person said: “This is sickening. Rangers FC should pay the bill that the council will incur. Shameful and unneeded.”

Another added: “Several thousand people there, all in breach of Covid rules. That’s £200 a pop - should pay for it with plenty to spare if CCTV is watched carefully.”

And one person said: “This is absolutely disgusting! I pray that Rangers will be paying the bill for all the vandalism.”

We told earlier how the owner of a Rangers supporters pub launched a fundraiser to repair memorial benches damaged by fans.

Over £5,000 has been raised after Robert Marshall, who runs The Louden Tavern, organised an appeal which was launched earlier today.
