Glasgow city centre hit-and-run sparks police investigation as man rushed to hospital

A man has been rushed to hospital following a hit-and-run in Glasgow city centre.

Police were called to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car on High Street, in the Merchant City area, at around 3.30pm today.

The 36-year-old pedestrian was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment, where his condition remains unknown.

Officers are requesting any witnesses to come forward as they attempt to trace the driver involved, who made off before police arrived at the scene.

An eyewitness told Glasgow Live that there was a large police presence and that the area was cordoned off for some time.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Helen Street said: “Around 3.30pm on Saturday, 3 September, police were called to a report of a man struck by a car on High Street, Glasgow.

“Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and trace the driver who made off before police attended. “The 36-year-old pedestrian has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"Anyone with information that may assist the investigation, including anyone with personal footage is asked to contact officers through 101 with reference 2130 of 3 September."
