Glasgow carer refused to shower dementia patient instead leaving her soiled and half-naked

A Glasgow carer has been given a warning over her treatment of a vulnerable elderly woman at work.

Sandra Clark was reported to the Scottish Social Services Council over her behaviour while working as a dementia care worker at Southside Older People Service by the Mungo Foundation.

It was found that in April 2020, she shouted at a resident telling her to "stop this f*****g carry on" before shouting at her that it was "time to get up". She later shouted at the woman to "behave yourself, I told you it's time to get up."

Clark failed to shower the same woman after she soiled herself and didn't bother to cover her with a towel or sheet and left her sitting naked from the waist down.

A report into the incidents found that the carer had failed to treat the vulnerable woman with "respect". It outlined: "You shouted and swore at AA.

"This was serious and could have caused distress to AA especially as AA is a vulnerable resident. Social care workers should also maintain the dignity of vulnerable residents. You did not shower AA when AA soiled herself and left AA sitting naked from the waist down without covering AA.

"The behaviour is serious as this is not the standard that is expected of social care workers."

The panel decided that Clark should be allowed to keep working in the sector but should have a warning placed on her registration for a period of 24 months. It was noted that she expressed 'some remorse and insight' during the investigation and that the behaviour was an 'isolated incident'.
