Glasgow Airport lockdown sparked by 'suspicious item' at security as bomb squad arrive

Police have now confirmed Glasgow Airport has been locked down due to a suspicious item found during a security search.

The busy airport has been on alert since around 5.55am this morning, with the central search area and check-in closed due to the incident.

Passengers have also been moved outside to the carparks and pictures shared to social media show the arrival of the bomb squad, including a bomb disposal robot.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are also in attendance at the scene.

One passenger was due to fly to London today but has since given up on his flight and left the airport.

Michael told Glasgow Live: "We were evacuated to outside the airport. My flight hasn't officially been cancelled by EasyJet but I have left the airport."

Some passengers, pilots, flight attendants and airport personnel have also been moved to the nearby Holiday Inn Express.

Bryan Long is one of those passengers and has been at the airport for his flight to Dublin since 5.50am. He told Glasgow Live : "Many have been moved from the parking structures to the Holiday Inn Express. There is a sense of calm. Everyone is following the instructions given, just waiting for the all clear."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.55 am on Monday, 5 December 2022, police were called to a report of a suspicious item within the security search hall of Glasgow Airport.

"As a precaution the check-in and security hall areas were closed to the public.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is in attendance and a cordon is now in place. Staff and members of the public have been moved from the check-in area to the multi-storey car park.

"Police and emergency services remain at the scene."

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: "The terminal’s check-in and central search areas are closed due to an ongoing incident and passengers have been moved outside the building to our covered car park.

"We are liaising with Police Scotland on site and will provide a further update when we can."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to assist emergency service partners at around 6am on Monday, 5 December to an incident at Glasgow Airport.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene and crews are currently in attendance.”
