Glasgow Against Closures stage George Square protest over decision to shut 59 city venues

Actors Gavin Mitchell and Tam Dean Burn have added their voices to the hundreds protesting planned venue closures in Glasgow.

The pair joined up to 300 people at a #SaveOurVenues rally in George Square yesterday, arranged by campaign group Glasgow Against Closures to highlight the loss of 59 libraries, sports and leisure facilities facing community transfers.

The message over places under threat like Whiteinch Library was a plea to Glasgow City Council, and arms-length organisation Glasgow Life, to stop any planned takeovers.

Protesters hope to send a clear message to council bosses that venues belong to the people of Glasgow.

The event was concluded with a symbolic letter to council leader Susan Aitken as campaigners made their voice heard.

Organiser Jim Monaghan told Glasgow Live: "The campaign's become a specific focus when we saw the list of potential transfers come out from Glasgow Life.

"There's a few sports fields, community centres all marked for asset transfers.

"We don't mind community ownership but transferring things that are run by the council to community ownership is not a good idea.

"We prefer these things to be run by the council, it's safer and a lot more democratically accountable. It's a lot cheaper as well."

Protestors held banners opposing the planned moves as they stood in solidarity.

"Community empowerment seems like a good idea but inevitably it ends up with precarious organisations struggling for funds every year and volunteers replacing paid workers", Jim added.

"For all the campaigns together with the unions, there's three main messages: to stop the closures; return Glasgow Life back in-house as a council service; and to stop the asset transfers.

"Real community empowerment is the council listening to people's voices and doing what we want them to do."

Glasgow Against Closures will continue their movement with more events in the future.

Jim added: "The next stage of the plan is to look at the formal challenges and going through the official council and government petitions. We will have more big campaigns so watch this space."

The potential move of Whitinch Library to Scotstoun is one of many transfers to upset campaigners.

And despite Glasgow Life announcing that they will reopen the People's Palace in the city's east end, there has yet to be news on the Winter Gardens there - which has fuelled some of the campaigns.
