A nine-year-old girl was thrown into the air after being charged by a bull bison in Yellowstone National Park.

The girl was part of a group of 50 people who were allegedly stood within five to ten feet of the animal for 20 minutes before it charged at them.

They had been near the Old Faithful Geyser in the Wyoming volcanic hotspot.

After the incident on July 22, the girl, from Odessa, Florida, was taken to a nearby clinic by the park emergency medical team, but was later released.

The herd of bison who live in the park are one of the oldest and largest in the US, with the population estimated at almost 5,000.

The National Park Service advise visitors to stay 25 yards from large animals, such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
