Girl, 8, who found mum collapsed uses FaceTime to save her life

A Blantyre schoolgirl has been praised after saving her mum’s life when she collapsed on the floor during the Easter holidays.

Peyton Martin, 8, was playing on her iPad when her little brother Cory, 4, started shouting that ‘mummy was sleeping on the ground’.

The youngster rushed over to see that her mum Nadine Bissett had collapsed and was shivering on the hall floor.

Thinking fast, Peyton grabbed her iPad and FaceTimed Nadine’s sister Cheryl Bissett, and told her what had happened in a bid to get help right away.

Peyton, a primary four pupil at St Joseph’s, said: “Cory shouted to me and said mum was lying on the ground sleeping.

“I FaceTimed my auntie Cheryl and told her what happened. She thought I was joking, but when I showed her mum on the floor she said she was going to phone an ambulance.”

Cheryl called the ambulance and they told her they were going to phone Peyton on the landline.

Peyton said: “The ambulance lady on the phone told me to keep calm and keep talking to my mum, which I did and to give her a blanket and pillow.

“I got a fright and Cory didn’t know what was going on, so I had to calm him down too and tell him to sit as he thought it was a joke.”

The emergency services operator told Peyton to open the door so the paramedics could get in to see Nadine.

The ambulance soon arrived and Nadine’s sister Cheryl and nephew Declan Murphy (18) also ran down to be with them.

Nadine said: “I hadn’t been feeling right for a few days. I had a migraine and sore arms and legs, but I was just pottering around doing the housework when Cory asked me to get him a drink.

“I handed it to him and that is the last thing I remember.

“Next thing, I was drifting in and out and a paramedic was standing over the top of me.

“I was then taken to hospital and placed on observation where they ran tests, but they still haven’t got to the bottom of why I collapsed.”

The mum-of-two said she was so proud of the kids and that had they not acted, things could have been a lot worse.

She said: “Who knows what would’ve happened if the schools weren’t off.

“I might have still been on the floor and the kids would have been waiting for me to pick them up from school.

“I’m really proud of Peyton for acting as quickly as she did. She’s so brave, she’s a wee hero.”
