Gill excels in India's pink-ball tour game

Batting prodigy Shubman Gill could make his Test debut at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, having led the way for India in their pink-ball tour match at the SCG.

Concussion is clouding Cameron Green's prospects of receiving a baggy green in Adelaide, while fellow would-be debutant Will Pucovski has already been ruled out of the four-Test series opener because of a head knock.

But Gill, who boasts a staggering first-class average of 70, is showing the sort of form that suggests the start of his keenly-awaited Test career could soon come under lights.

Gill has been billed as the next big thing in India cricket since being named man of the series in his nation's under-19 World Cup triumph in 2018.

Pat Cummins, who played alongside Gill during the recent Indian Premier League season, is among many to have been wowed by the young gun's talent.

Gill was the pick of India's top six on day one of their clash with Australia A in Sydney, where he scored 43 in a total of 194 and was removed by a sensational delivery from Green.

The right-hander fell for 65 late in Saturday's opening session, shaking his head after the umpire judged him to have edged a delivery from Mitch Swepson' to Sean Abbott at first slip.

Gill helped his side reach 2-111 in their second innings at tea on day two, handing them a 197-run lead.

India's opening pairing for the first Test is unclear, as is the case with Australia.

Incumbents Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal, who is 38 not out in the ongoing tour game, are expected to be given the nod.

However, Shaw has logged scores of zero, 19, 40 and three in India's tour games.

Shaw threw away his wicket on Saturday, slapping a wide delivery from Mark Steketee to Swepson at point.

Steketee and Patrick Rowe have been substituted into Australia A's XI in place of Green and Harry Conway, who both suffered concussions on Friday.
