Giants unfazed by Bumgarner's bad minor league start, still target July 15 return

DETROIT _ Madison Bumgarner's comeback remains on schedule, even after a bumpy rehabilitation start. The left-hander gave up nine runs _ and four homers _ over the span of 76 pitches for Class A San Jose on Wednesday night.

But Manager Bruce Bochy seemed unfazed Thursday morning in Detroit, indicating that the timetable for Bumgarner's return remains on track. The 2014 World Series MVP will throw once more in San Jose, on July 10, this time with a 90-pitch limit.

After that, the plan calls for him to return to the Giants rotation on July 15 in San Diego, the second game after the All-Star break.

Bochy said Bumgarner's stat line was misleading.

"The first three innings were really good. He was hitting his spots," he said before the final game of the Giants' road trip. "The fourth inning was where he got the ball up and had the long inning."

Bumgarner gave up eight runs in the fourth to Rancho Cucamonga, a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate.

"But in listening to his remarks, he felt great," Bochy said. "He feels like his really close."

The onetime workhorse has been on the disabled list since April 21 with bruised ribs and other injuries sustained during a dirt bike accident in Colorado.
