Giants’ Saquon Barkley, St. Luke’s launch Whitehall ‘Center for Excellence’

Saquon Barkley’s NFL career may be at a crossroads but his legacy is not.

This past weekend, the star running back of the New York Giants was back at his alma mater — Whitehall High School in Pennsylvania — having a new sports facility named in his honor.

The St. Luke’s Sports Rink in Whitehall is now the Saquon Barkley Center for Excellence.

“Without Whitehall, I’m nothing,” Barkley said. “Without Whitehall, without Coplay, without the teachers, without the coaches, without my friends, without my family, there would be no Saquon Barkley.”

Barkley also took the opportunity to announce the launch of his foundation — the Michael Ann and Saquon Barkley Hope Foundation.

“The work of the foundation will benefit the Whitehall community by first providing quality physical activity experiences for children that might not otherwise have access to those…so camps, clinics, leagues,” said Dr. John Hauth, senior director for sports medicine relationships at St. Luke’s.

Barkley is solidifying his connection to his high school roots. His connection to the Giants may not be as solid as the team, although not actively shopping him, would deal Barkley and his $7.2 million salary if the right offer came along.

Barkley is in his fifth and final season of his rookie contract and, if he continues to display that he is no longer a top back, this could be his last season in blue. Period.
