Giants’ Rodarius Williams named a player who ‘could be cut’

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen are going to face some tough personnel choices at the end of training camp. They have stocked up at several positions this offseason, which means some difficult decisions will have to be made.

Among them are who get their walking papers at wide receiver and cornerback — two positions of quantity.

At cornerback, the Giants added Deonte Banks, who is likely to start, and Tre Hawkins through the 2023 NFL draft. They also signed Amani Oruwariye and Leonard Johnson in free agency.

In total, there are now 12 cornerbacks on the 90-man roster with the 53-man roster likely to carry just six or seven. That doesn’t bode well for the back-end of the team’s depth and David Kenyon of Bleacher Report believes that leaves Rodarius Williams as one of the odd men out.

Rodarius Williams flashed his ability with 15 tackles in three games last season after recovering from an ACL injury. Is the third-year corner part of the Giants’ plans, though? His inconsistent usage is concerning, and New York deepened the position this offseason—especially with first-round pick Deonte Banks. Williams may find that his opportunity to play is elsewhere.

A sixth-round pick in 2021, Williams has shown some promise but has been largely limited due to injuries over his first two years. He appeared in just two games last season, recording 15 tackles, two passes defensed and one interception.

Williams certainly faces an uphill battle here in 2023 and if he is ultimately waived, he could be a candidate for the team’s practice squad.
