Giant illuminated fishing nets go on display for Liverpool River Festival

The River Festival officially returns to Liverpool for 2019 tomorrow - with an exciting events programme planned.

Alongside the already unveiled giant Earth replica Gaia and stunning light and water show The Whale Song , the festival is set to a hugely exciting weekend for the city.

Amongst the new commissions this year is Urchins, a floating installation from internationally acclaimed artist Jin Choi.

Urchins consists of hand-crocheted works of art made from fishing nets; the installation will float above the water at Mann Island Atrium.

The piece is measures more than three metres in height and is nearly six metres wide.

The fabric shell will be illuminated each evening throughout June, joining the growing list of beautiful glowing structures available for viewing at the River Festival.

Also on the programme for this year’s festival are Faith Bebbington’s The Runner, which celebrates Liverpool’s links to the modern Olympic Games.

The River Festival will also host the world premiere of Jola Kudela’s YOLART, a commission celebrating the diversity of women living in Liverpool.
