Giannis Antetokounmpo wears imaginary crown in win over Lakers, LeBron

Giannis Antetokounmpo made a statement on Thursday night with his performance against the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis. And after one play in particular during the fourth quarter, Giannis made it known that he is coming for LeBron’s crown in particular.

After the game, Antetokounmpo tried to downplay taking a next step or taking the crown from LeBron by saying that “he’s not even supposed to be here” as was the case for Davis and James, according to Eric Nehm of The Athletic.

“I think the most important thing is trying to stay humble,” Antetokounmpo said. “When you win MVP and you win 60 games, it’s hard. You feel like, ‘What else?’ But at the end of the day, I realize and my family realizes I’m not supposed to be here. I wasn’t the No. 1 pick like AD was, like LeBron was.

But during the game when the emotions were rolling, Giannis couldn’t hide that he wanted LeBron’s crown as the King of the NBA.

LeBron and Giannis aren’t scheduled to face off again until March 6. While LeBron’s Lakers may keep pace with Giannis’ Bucks in the win-column, Giannis took the reigns of the MVP race with his performance last night. But as has been the case for most of the decade, LeBron’s opportunity to still be known as the best won’t happen until the postseason.
