Ghost of Yotei PS5 console special edition revealed

Sony debuted the very first look at gameplay from Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei, as well as revealing two special edition versions of the PlayStation 5 console, unique to the game.

The consoles feature intricate designs, complete with a matching DualSense Wireless controller.

The designs are based on the studio’s fictional depiction of the region of Ezo (which is now known as Hokkaido), and the world that players will embark on to explore the main character Atsu’s tale of vengeance.

Mount Yotei is an iconic location all of its own and forms a prominent part of the design, having become a symbol for Hokkaido as well as Atsu herself.

With the game paying tribute to Japanese culture and traditions, the artwork was designed to reflect two beautiful Japanese visual traditions, with one represented in each of the bundles.

The first is the Ghost of Yotei Gold Limited Edition Bundle, set to be available globally and inspired by the Japanese art form, kintsugi.

This refers to a traditional process to repair broken ceramics with lacquer and gold, creating the effect of golden veins running throughout a ceramic piece.

The console design captures the essence of kintsugi and mirrors Atsu’s own personal journey of healing and resilience amidst the adversities she’ll face along the way in Ghost of Yotei, due for release on October 2.

The other option is the Ghost of Yotei Black Limited Edition Bundle, which is available exclusively from the PlayStation store, takes inspiration from another Japanese traditional art form, Sumi-e.

This uses black ink on paintings, reflected in the representations of the landmarks of Ezo in bold black brush strokes, echoing Atsu’s inner struggle and journey towards redemption.

Both bundles also come with a matching DualSense wireless controller, featuring a striking silhouette of Atsu on the DualSense touchpad and a special maker’s seal engraved with PlayStation shapes, matching what’s on the top cover of the console.

“Our inspiration for this design came straight from one of the core aspects within the game: a deep focus on exploration,” said Jason Connell, Creative Director at Sucker Punch. “This includes the hand-drawn icons Atsu marks on her map, a kintsugi-style effect pulled from her Ghost mask, and brushstrokes reminiscent of her Sumi-e paintings.

“The towering Mount Yotei is included at the centre of the console design to pull it all together, and Atsu is spotlighted on the DualSense controller. Each of these elements was thoughtfully woven into both the console and controller designs.”

If you already own a PlayStation 5 (Slim) or PlayStation 5 Pro console, you’ll also be able to purchase Console Covers in select regions, featuring the same kintsugi-inspired designs from the Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition Bundle.

Both designs of the DualSense Wireless Controller will also be available as standalone purchases.
