Germany gears up for post-Merkel era

The year 2020 is expected to be relatively calm for German politics with only one state set to hold elections.

That gives the country's main parties time to take stock after a surge in support for the far right.

With Chancellor Angela Merkel bowing out of politics by the next federal elections, due in 2021, she will need to figure out how to transfer her popularity to the next party leader.

Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane reports from Berlin.
