Geri Horner might be pop royalty, but her latest appearance on This Morning had viewers more confused than captivated. The 52-year-old Spice Girl dropped by the ITV studio to chat with Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary about her new book Rosie Frost: Ice On Fire, the second instalment in her young adult trilogy.
While the focus was meant to be on her growing writing career, things took an unexpected turn when Geri launched into a spontaneous round of voice acting. Proudly revealing she narrates the audiobook herself, she added, “I do the accents for the audiobook. You haven’t got a Brummy in there, but I do some accents”, reported the Mirror.
Without warning, she dived headfirst into a series of over-the-top impressions. First up was a dramatic Southern American drawl: “She’s like ‘oh my God Alison, you got to be out of your mind.’”
She quickly flipped to an Irish accent, aimed cheekily at Dermot: “Then we got a Dermot, he’s kind of just Dermot, ‘What are you talking about?’”
Finally, Geri rounded things off with a French flair, channelling a character named Madame Lure: “You’re just so elegant. I’m so proud of you.” Alison couldn’t help but laugh, telling Geri, “You’re so good. I want to listen to the audio now. I’m not going to read the book!”
But while the studio vibe was playful, social media didn’t hold back. One viewer posted: “Geri Halliwell on This Morning is behaving bizarrely. It’s like she’s shouting and emphasising every word. Just over intense & try-hard.” Another asked: “The accents? Is this a fever dream?” A third summed it up with: “Geri… just stop, this is an absolute cringe.”
Still, the backlash hasn’t slowed down Geri’s momentum in the literary world. Her Rosie Frost series is picking up steam, particularly in the US, where Hollywood producers are eyeing a film adaptation.
According to insiders, Geri has already met with film execs and is in talks about bringing the trilogy to the big screen. Though she wouldn’t be involved in the day-to-day production, she’s expected to stay on as a consultant — a role she’s reportedly thrilled about.
One source said the US response to Geri’s author career has been overwhelmingly positive. “There is no snootiness about her becoming an author,” they added. “That’s just not the vibe in America. It’s a perfect fit for Geri’s go-getter spirit.” So while her accent antics may have raised eyebrows here, across the pond, Geri’s star might just be rising all over again.
