Georgia Tech’s turnover social media white board is… weird

It’s definitely not as cool as Miami’s turnover chain — the Hurricanes also have touchdown rings too now — and it’s not as peculiar as a turnover backpack or a turnover plank or a turnover robe or turnover trash can. But Georgia Tech’s turnover get-more-followers-on-social-media white board is just kind of weird.

Although the Yellow Jackets got destroyed Thursday by Clemson, 52-14, their defense came up with a handful of turnovers against the defending national champs, including picking off Heisman Trophy favorite Trevor Lawrence twice.

And you know what you get when you’re on Georgia Tech’s defense and force a turnover? You get to go over to a white board with “Get the Ball” written at the top of it and add your preferred social media handle.

As the ACC Network’s broadcast explained, the Yellow Jackets are rewarding turnovers by trying to help players get more followers on social media. Sure, why not? But this could also kind of backfire because should a player make a standout play one minute and a mistake the next, his social handle is even more readily available for fans who want to offer their unsolicited opinions.

Clemson has strict rules about not using social media during the season, while Georgia Tech is out there saying, “Follow us!” It’s not bad, it’s not great, it’s just odd.

And it might not actually be that original because it looks like Temple has the same idea a couple years ago.

As far as turnover props are concerned, the more creative the better. Turnover wrestling belts are timeless, Tennessee’s turnover trash can was ridiculous, Kennesaw State’s turnover plank is hilarious and Florida State’s turnover backpack is gone — thankfully.

But at this point, especially with a new design emerging each season, Miami’s turnover chain remains the best.
