George's Tradition chip shops scrap NHS discount due to 'unpleasant' complaints

A chip shop chain has axed discounts for NHS staff after a number of "unpleasant" complaints.

George's Tradition had been offering a limited number of allotted slots each day giving 50 percent off to the emergency services and hospital workers but had been inundated with requests, making it difficult to manage.

Boss Andrew Constantinou said: "When we launched our Click and Collect service we provided a discount for NHS and Blue Light crews as our way of saying ’thank you’ for the amazing service that you give to us all.

"We have received a great deal of positive feedback for which we are extremely grateful, however, due to overwhelming demand it has become increasingly difficult to deal with the hundreds of discount requests that we receive each day.

"This has resulted in a number of small-minded people writing to me making unjustified complaints including some quite unpleasant content."

The chain, which has chip shops in Chilwell, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and Ilkeston, will stop the discount from tomorrow, Thursday May 7.

Mr Constantinou said: "I for one will be eternally grateful to everyone on the front line who is working tirelessly to keep our communities safe but for some time I have been conscious of the unsung heroes who support us in so many different ways."

Instead of NHS discount, the company will make a weekly £500 donation to good causes nominated by customers.
