George Michael's sister dies on Christmas Day - exactly three years after her brother

The sister of George Michael has died on Christmas Day, exactly three years after her brother's death.

Melanie Panayiotou, a hairdresser, who was 55, was found by her older sister Yioda at her home in Hampstead, north London.

She was close to her brother and was left part of his estate, which included a Grade II-listed mansion in Highgate, London.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement to the Mirror: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service at approximately 19.35 hours on Wednesday, 25 December to reports of a sudden death of a woman, aged in her 50s, at an address in Oak Hill Park, NW3.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious by police.

"A report will be compiled for the coroner into the circumstances."

Melanie had previously spoken to the Big Issue about the release of a film, Last Christmas, inspired by her brother's work.

He was found dead at his home, in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, on Christmas Day, 2016, at the age of 53.

A subsequent post-mortem examination found that a fatty liver and enlarged heart were contributory factors in his death.

During his career, he had hits including Faith and Careless Whisper.

Just days before the anniversary, the family released a statement thanking fans for their kind messages that "lift us when things are tough."

In a statement on his official website, they said: "We know how much his lyrics can offer support when things are tough and help celebrate when times are good and life is going well... and that is just as powerful now as if he were still with us and as many of you say in your messages, it's a gift."
