George Edmundson backs Rangers pal Connor Goldson to forget Celtic blunder and be a better player

George Edmundson says Connor Goldson is ready to bounce back from his Old Firm blunder and doesn’t see it as a chance to step into his shoes.

Goldson gifted Celtic the ball in the build-up to Odsonne Edouard’s opener at Ibrox to set the Hoops on the way to a vital 2-0 win at Ibrox.

There have been growing calls from a section of Rangers fans for former Brighton stopper Goldson to be taken out of the side by Steven Gerrard with both Edmundson and Filip Helander waiting in the wings.

But Edmundson played down the mistake and says the central defenders have been supporting each other with Goldson and Nikola Katic the first choice central pairing.

Gers host Livingston on Saturday as they look to recover from the Celtic set-back and £700,000 Oldham signing Edmundson said: “Connor’s fine. He’s ready to go again.

“You are not going to go a full season and not make a mistake. He has learned from it and he will move onto the next game.

“We are in competition with each other but we are also a team. It’s healthy competition, it’s friendly. We are not out to get each other or saying: ‘I should be playing!’

“If Connor and Niko have the shirt then I support them 100 per cent and if I get the shirt they support me. We are not out to get each other.”

Edmundson wasn’t involved in the derby but admitted witnessing it opened his eyes to the size of Rangers after he made the step up from England’s League Two in the summer.

Gerrard’s men now trail the eight-in-a-row champions by three points but he said: “It’s still early days in the season and I’m sure Celtic will slip up at some point.

“I don’t think they are going to go the whole season unbeaten. It was a little hiccup but there’s a long season with ups and downs to come.

“We didn’t feel we played our best but it’s early days and there’s a long way to go. There will be highs and lows along the way.

“It was a good experience even though the result was not the best. But we have watched it back, we learn from it and we go again.

“The atmosphere was good. I feel like I know how big a club Rangers is. But the atmosphere will be better next time - when we win!”
