Gen Z Spending Habits: Self-Care, Therapy, and Small Joys Take Center Stage

A 22-year-old woman from Bengaluru recently sparked widespread discussion online after sharing a breakdown of her monthly expenses, which she described as her “Gen Z expenses.” Her video quickly went viral, drawing both admiration and criticism from viewers.

A Breakdown of Her Monthly Spending

The woman began by highlighting how she prioritizes small personal joys in her routine. One such habit is buying herself flowers two to three times a month, which costs her approximately ₹2,000.

Mental health, she emphasized, is non-negotiable. She regularly attends therapy sessions for her well-being, spending around ₹10,000 per month.

She also maintains a weekly ritual of taking herself out for a Sunday brunch, which adds up to about ₹2,000 monthly.

Weekends Focused on Self-Care

Her weekends are dedicated to relaxation and grooming. She spends roughly ₹5,000 per month on massages and pedicures, making self-care a consistent part of her lifestyle.

In addition, she invests in regular nail care, which costs her around ₹3,000 monthly.

Investing in Calm and Personal Growth

Beyond physical self-care, she also allocates money toward items that help her feel calm and centered. She spends about ₹1,000 a month on aesthetic items that she says help regulate her nervous system.

She also invests in personal growth tools such as guided journals, gratitude planners, and vision boards, with a monthly expense of approximately ₹2,000.

Explaining her perspective, she said she calls these “Gen Z expenses” because such spending on oneself was less common and often not widely accepted among previous generations, particularly millennials.

Mixed Reactions Online

Her video triggered a wide range of reactions on social media. Some users questioned her lifestyle, suggesting that such spending reflects a lack of responsibilities.

Others compared generational attitudes, with one comment stating that millennials tend to be more mindful and balance enjoyment with responsibilities.

There were also voices cautioning against generalizing entire generations based on individual choices.

Support for Self-Care Choices

Despite the criticism, many viewers expressed support for her approach. Several users praised her for prioritizing self-love and mental well-being, with some even saying they wished they could adopt similar habits.

The discussion highlights a broader cultural shift, where younger generations are redefining financial priorities—placing greater emphasis on emotional well-being, personal growth, and enjoying life in the present.
