Gemma Oaten reveals Corrie cobbles blunder on first day and what it's really like working with Alan Halsall

Coronation Street has announced that it has signed up Gemma Oaten for a brief stint in Weatherfield.

The actress is best known for playing Rachel Breckle in fellow ITV soap Emmerdale.

Her latest character will be a far cry from what viewers are used to as Isla sets her sights on the newly single Tyrone Dobbs.

But as ever, there's a catch.

Isla is married but when her daughter Darcy attends a party with Hope, Tyrone’s daughter the flirty mum suggests the four of them go for a milkshake together.

Later, as Hope and Darcy giggle over their milkshakes, Isla sets her sights on Tyrone further, suggesting they should meet up for a drink.

And let's just say it ruffles some feathers.

"The moment I read the break down I was like, 'Oh my God this is brilliant,'" Gemma told the Manchester Evening News and other press about finding out about the part.

"One of the descriptions was, 'Isla is the kind of girl who will pay to go on a coach to Marbella just to be seen but actually she's going to Futureventura.'"

But it was the other character description that only helped sell it - and had something to do with a former Girls Aloud star.

"The other part o it was, 'Cheryl Cole before she got spruced up,' which I thought was hilarious.

"So I thought I'm getting the gist here so I put my slap on for the self-tape and put on a tarty, fashionable-type top and went for it."

Gemma also spoke about her first day on the famous Salford-based set - and learned the hard way that the cobbles are tricky to navigate.

"Getting there, because you walk over the bridge at MediaCity and it's like this whole island. It feels like the Wizard of Oz like you're going over the yellow brick road.

"[I] walked in and my heart was in my mouth. I got lost, I walked the wrong way."

She added: "Going on the cobbles was the surrealist thing ever and again, I was petrified but immediately Alan's [Halsall] there with his big grin and I noticed someone familiar behind the camera and it was one of the guys on my first job from Doctors.

"So that was really lovely. I did my first take and speaking of cobbles, there was a line where she [Isla] is asking Tyrone out for a drink and she sort of flounces around and then totters off back to the Kabin.

"And I flounced around, totted off, and tripped over. So the cobbles aren't that safe in heels - especially after you haven't worn heels for 18 months."

Gemma also revealed what it was like working with Alan, who has starred in the soap as Tyrone for more than 20 years.

"Dream," she said. "It's interesting because my brother used to play for Salford Reds years ago and when our Chris lived in Salford, he often went out with Andy [Whyment] and Alan would sometimes be around so there was that connection there already.

"But he's just so easy to talk to. FOr me, it's always scary as an actor when you have to do the relationship on camera because you don't know if you're going to click with the person.

"You've got to act but when there's a real connection with somebody, it makes it so much easier."

She added: "Alan gave me the ability to do that. I'm not a confident person when it comes to approaching me for dates. I'm confident in many ways but not always the most confident like that so I had to act that and Alan gave me the confidence to do that.

"He was a really good guy and we chatted about or charity work and just life.

"The one thing I loved about Alan more than anything was his gratitude for the job."
