Gemma Atkinson thought she'd 'failed at childbirth' as she discusses baby number two with Gorka Marquez

Gemma Atkinson has revisited her daughter's traumatic birth as she thinks about expanding her family.

The Hits Radio presenter and her fiancee, Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez, welcomed their first child together in July 2019.

But Mia's arrival wasn't plain sailing.

Gemma needed an emergency C-section when doctors realised Mia's heart rate had dropped.

The Hollyoaks star almost died when she lost nearly a litre of blood after suffering a from a haemorrhage.

Gemma has previously spoken out about her terrifying birth story but revisited it for Steph's Packed Lunch this week.

The 37-year-old, from Bury, recorded a film for the Channel 4 show where she spoke to others who suffered complicated births.

"All these things were going through my mind, what did I do that caused all that to happen? I was telling myself for weeks and weeks I’d failed at childbirth," Gemma said in the film.

"I was having horrible dreams that someone was going to take Mia from me...

"I remember my mum running in my bedroom and I was sat up screaming, sweating."

But when Mia was eight-weeks-old, things changed for Gemma.

"We went out with the pram and a lady said, ‘Oh I believe it [the birth] wasn’t a success was it, you know, what happened?'" she recalled.

"My mum piped up and said, ‘It was a huge success, Mia’s there, Gemma’s here, total success.’

"Something clicked in me then, my body had done me proud because it had recovered and got me through."

Following Mia's birth, Gemma publicly heaped praise on the NHS 'angels' at Royal Bolton Hospital for their care.

Gorka, who witnessed his then-girlfriend and the first-time mum in a horrifying state, has previously spoken about seeing Gemma so sick.

"The whole bedding was completely red," he said on Loose Women in September 2019.

"I see Gemma was feeling very poorly, the bed was completely red, 10/15 doctors rushed in they pushed me in a corner, so I [could] see everything."

Despite going through such an ordeal, Gemma and Gorka have been thinking about having another child.

Gemma said on Steph's Packed Lunch: "I’m at the stage where I want a sister or bother for Mia.

"The first few months of Mia’s life, I kept saying to my partner, Gorka, I’m not going through that again. I’ve now come of it and I feel I could."
