Gaza activists vow to keep pressure on Scottish Government after BDS pledge

GAZA activists have vowed to keep applying pressure to the Scottish Government after MSPs voted for a package of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against the state of Israel.

Stop The War, which is hosting a protest this Saturday in Edinburgh, will demand immediate implementation of the boycott.

It will also demand an end to the repression of the Gaza solidarity movement, and for an end to all UK Government support for Israel.

Activists will gather at The Mound at 1.30pm and march at 2pm to the UK Government HQ at Queen Elizabeth House.

The marchers will join an action by groups including Defend Our Juries, demanding an end to arrests of peaceful protesters.

The call comes after a Scottish Green proposal demanding “the Scottish and UK Governments immediately impose a package of boycotts, divestment and sanctions targeted at the state of Israel” passed in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday.

The session also saw Scottish funds pledged to Palestinian humanitarian projects, and a pledge to withhold public funds from companies supplying arms to Israel.

Stop the War Scotland secretary, Sophie Johnson, said: “The vote for boycott, divestment and sanctions measures in the Scottish Parliament is a major victory for solidarity movement.

"It proves that mass pressure has shifted the whole debate about Palestine in this country, and that protest can have a real material effect in isolating Israel during this genocide.

“We need to drive a wedge deeper between Holyrood and Westminster. If these measures can be adopted in Scotland, why not UK wide? British state assistance to the Israeli government, whether through arms exports or military co-operation, must end.

“We also need to keep the pressure up in Scotland. We know from experience that the substance of these changes will be decided in the streets. As yet, there is still a good deal of Scottish engagement with the Israeli state, which the people of this country object to."

Stop the War says its protest has gained "added urgency" following the arrest of five leading members of Defend Our Juries, ahead of the Lift the Ban protests this Saturday, one of which is taking place at the UK Government HQ in Edinburgh.

The arrests came ahead of a press conference where the campaign group were due to set out how they were going to take “mass action” against the Palestine Action ban.

Kerry Moscogiuri, director of campaigns at Amnesty International UK, said the arrest of five lead spokespeople for the campaign group was “incredibly concerning” and may breach international law.

Stop the War Scotland co-chair Jade Eckhaus said: "The arrests of campaigners for simply attending Zoom calls are a chilling attack on free speech. If giving legal advice about potentially participating in protest can be treated as terrorism, none of us are safe.

“This Saturday’s march is crucial. It will bring together those willing to defy the ban with the wider mass movement, showing unity against repression, standing in solidarity with Palestine, and defending the right to protest."
