Gavin Coombes signs new two year deal with Munster Rugby in boost to the Reds

Gavin Coombes has signed a two-year contract extension with Munster that will keep him with the province until at least 2025.

Skibbereen man Coombes, 24, had a year left on his current deal but Reds chiefs were eager to tie him down to a longer deal. He is set to make his 50th appearance for the Reds against Leinster at Thomond Park on Saturday.

The talented no 8 - he was Munster’s youngest ever Player of the Year last season and made his senior Ireland debut last summer - has scored 21 tries in 49 appearances for the club since graduating from the academy to the senior squad in 2019.

In the the 2020/21 season, Coombes scored a record-breaking 15 tries in 22 appearances - the most tries ever scored by a Munster player for the province in a single season - and so far has scored four tries in 12 appearances this term.

Coombes has two caps to his name to date, both earned in the summer series against Japan and the USA, and will be disappointed not to get game time in this year's Six Nations.

He will look to kick on now with the tour to New Zealand coming in July and then the World Cup next year.
