Gateshead teenager who died after being hit by a car named by police

Police have named a teenager who died after being hit by a car.

On Saturday police received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the A694 at Derwent Haugh Park, Blaydon, at the junction with Swalwell Cricket Club.

On Tuesday they confirmed the victim was Sam McIver of Winlaton Mill, Gateshead.

Critical care nurses who came across the collision worked hard to save Mr McIver until paramedics arrived to take over.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His devastated family are currently being supported by specialist officers and ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.

Police launched an investigation into the incident immediately.

On Monday bouquets of white and yellow flowers could be seen at the entrance to the Swalwell Cricket Club in tribute to Mr McIver.

Police have re-issued their appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Matt Sykes of the Force’s Motor Patrols Department said: “Sam’s family are very much in our thoughts at this extremely sad time and I continue to ask members of the public to respect their privacy.

“We remain committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding this incident and I again appeal to anybody who was in the area around that time to come forward with any information or dashcam footage, as it may prove crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

If you or know anyone who has any information, please call 101 quoting reference 1032 121220 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
