Gateshead FC assistant manager Ian Watson dismissed - leaving just four staff members

Gateshead assistant manager Ian Watson has been relieved of his duties following the conclusion of the 2018/19 National League campaign.

His dismissal means Gateshead FC sale could be off as club set to appoint two new directors now just have four remaining employees on the club's books.

All Gateshead players are now out of contract with the exception of Scott Barrow, whose contract runs until the end of June.

Manager Ben Clark remains at the club, while midfielder JJ O'Donnell is currently still employed as the club's kit manager though his playing contract has expired.

Watson first joined Gateshead in 2015 as a part-time strength and conditioning coach.

Following the departure of Steve Watson and Micky Cummins in January 2019, the 33-year-old former Blyth Spartans defender was then appointed as Ben Clark's assistant manager on a full-time basis.

Clark and Watson worked together to help Gateshead continue their unlikely play-off push into the final week of the season before having to settle for a top-10 finish in the National League.

The Heed's ninth-placed finish was made even more impressive by the fact that they had to operate under a transfer embargo for the majority of the season and ended their campaign with just 14 senior outfield players following the departures of their top two scorers, Luke Armstrong and Scott Boden, as well as key defender Fraser Kerr.

This leaves just manager Clark, the aforementioned Barrow and O'Donnell, and press officer Dominic Scurr as the club's only remaining employees.
