Worried Ayr explosion residents refused meeting by gas bosses three weeks on from blast

Gas bosses have turned down the chance to speak to concerned residents in Kincaidston after a request from an MSP.

SGN are not willing to hold a sit down with a community living in fear after a devastating explosion rocked homes and gas workers identified leaks in the following weeks.

Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown requested the company to participate in a public meeting so they can answer the community's concerns.

The SNP politician insisted the fear will not go away unless the community have the chance to put forward their questions.

Last week Ms Brown told how she would like SGN to meet with residents and for South Ayrshire Council to be part of a meeting.

Ms Brown told Ayrshire Live: “I was contacted by several concerned residents, who felt they would like an opportunity to voice their concerns and have their questions answered by SGN. I too, felt this would be beneficial to alleviate concerns and put paid to any speculation and misinformation on social media. I have contacted SGN on numerous occasions to ask for a meeting.

“I have also been in touch with South Ayrshire Council to see if it is possible for the local authority to be part of this meeting.

“I appreciate the investigation into the cause is on-going and it will take some time. We must respect that process. I thank everyone at SGN and the emergency services who are committed to finding answers and I await the findings from the Health and Safety Executive.

“However, the residents are angry and frustrated and they need reassurances now. This was a terrifying experience for everyone involved and that fear is not going to go away unless they get a chance to ask questions.

But on Monday she confirmed that a meeting will not go ahead after being in touch with the gas supplier on several occasions.

Instead a gas engineer boss has been put forward to individually visit those residents who contacted the MSP.

Ms Brown revealed details of her talks with SGN who assured her that the gas supply is safe and that minor repairs have been made.

In a response to Ms Brown, SGN said: “SGN want to reassure residents that a comprehensive safety survey has been carried out across the gas network on the whole estate and minor repairs have been made. This means it is safe for people living there and safe to use boilers and cookers.

“SGN has once again invited anyone with concerns to get in touch with their customer services team on the number provided in their recent letter drop."

Ms Brown added: “Those residents who have contacted me are being offered a call or visit from an engineering manager to put their minds at rest." If you feel you would benefit from this, get in touch at the following address: siobhian.brown.msp@parliament.scot

It is understood that gas bosses are unwilling to meet the community due to an ongoing investigation into the explosion in Gorse Park.

SGN also called for patience in the community.

An SGN spokesperson added: “We must also remember the investigation into the cause by the police and HSE is on-going and we need to respect that process.

"This will take time. I understand it’s difficult to remain patient in this situation. Whilst this is the case and notwithstanding the issues of Covid-19, a public meeting will not take place.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of four who are still recovering."
