Gary Neville warns Man Utd must make one change if they are to challenge for the title

Gary Neville has warned Manchester United that without finding the ability to break down defensive teams, they will remain also-rans in the Premier League title race.

A 1-0 win over West Ham means the Red Devils are likely to finish in the Champions League spots, while also strengthening their case as the best of the rest behind Manchester City.

However, they remain a distant challenger to City, who sit 14 points clear at the top of the table.

It was a difficult challenge passed in the shape of a miserly Hammers team set-up to frustrate the hosts.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side spurned several promising opportunities before a deflected Scott McTominay header found the back of the net via Craig Dawson.

That proved to be the difference as Moyes’ miserable record at Old Trafford continued.

But speaking after the win, Neville told Sky Sports that without finding a way to break down teams that are willing to sit in, they will continue to trail the league’s elite.

"They do struggle to break down teams,” he explained. “If you think about how Man City dismantle teams that sit deep against them, Manchester United just aren't capable of that yet.

“It has been something that you can quite obviously see, when they play on the counter attack, even towards the end, they're a lot better.

“They have got to get better at playing against teams that are really sit back in those deep blocks, got 10 men behind the ball.

“That's where the next stage of development for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer  has got to come from. If they don't start doing that better, they won't win this Premier League."

It’s Leicester City next up for Solskjaer’s team, with a place in the FA Cup semi finals up for grabs.

And Neville believes that his old side must win a trophy in order to cap their development under the Norwegian.

He added: "I think Manchester United do need to win a trophy this season along with finishing second. We know what Manchester United are."
