Gary Neville sends Liverpool transfer warning over Thiago Alcantara and Premier League title

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has warned Liverpool they need to make a significant move in the transfer market this summer if they are to successfully defend their Premier League title.

The Reds ended up winners last term with an 18-point gap over nearest rivals Manchester City but Pep Guardiola is already spending big to try and regain top spot.

City have bought in Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres so far as they look to overtake Jurgen Klopp's side. Other Premier League sides are also making moves to become more competitive next season as Manchester United confirmed the signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax while Chelsea have been relentless in the summer window following the end of their transfer ban.

Frank Lampard has already welcomed once Liverpool linked Timo Werner as well as Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and are reportedly close to completing a deal for Kai Havertz.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have only bought one senior signing so far in Kostas Tsimikas as backup for Andy Robertson and Gary Neville doubts it will be enough for the Reds to repeat their league heroics.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, he declares Liverpool signing a player like Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich could prove crucial in the next title race.

He said: “Liverpool have been brilliant for two years, but I think it’s hard to win back to back titles,

“Liverpool could do it, they’re an exceptional team, and if they are to sign Thiago it would make them very strong again. But I do think they need that one signing.

“They need that stimulus for the squad, who have been together for a couple of years."

It's not the first time Neville has commented on the Thiago to Liverpool rumours, he has previously spoken about his worries for his former club Manchester United if LFC were to get such a deal done.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the popular pundit explained: "If Liverpool get Thiago, if Manchester City do what they are looking like they are going to do and with Chelsea doing what they've done, they are your competitors and they all look like they are improving and moving forward.

"So, United have to do business but I do believe more in the strategy of what's happening, they just have to get the deals over the line.

"That's not always easy but they have to try and do it quickly to give Ole the time to build to get this team moulded for the start of the season."
