Gary Neville makes Jose Mourinho point to prove why Antonio Conte wasn't right for Man United

Gary Neville has insisted Antonio Conte wouldn’t have been a good fit for Manchester United, drawing comparisons with former manager Jose Mourinho.

Conte was continually linked with United towards the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign after he left his role at Inter Milan. Tottenham acted first, sacking Nuno Espirito Santo following a defeat to the Reds last season before appointing the Italian.

Under his guidance, Spurs managed to clinch Champions League qualification, beating United and Arsenal to a place in the top four. Following a busy summer in the transfer market, Conte’s side are now being tipped for a tilt at the Premier League title.

Meanwhile, United have continued to slide, with defeats in their opening two games of the season seeing them sit bottom of the league. Following more differing fortunes for Conte and Erik ten Hag, the former’s links to United have once again been raised in recent days.

There has always been debate over Conte’s suitability for United, with some feeling the Italian’s behaviour on the touchline wouldn’t be befitting of the club. Speaking about his bust-up with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on Sunday, former United captain Neville was reminded of Mourinho’s spell at Old Trafford.

“I watched that second half yesterday, I don’t think that’s a Manchester United manager,” Neville told Sky Sports. “We had Jose at the club and Jose did a brilliant job.

“You look back now, finishing second, winning trophies, but it didn’t work in the end and I just don’t think it would at Manchester United for Conte. But he’s a brilliant manager and I love him to bits, I’m glad he’s in our league but not the right fit for the club. Erik’s the man.”
