Gary Neville gives verdict on Anthony Martial red card for Manchester United vs Tottenham

Gary Neville was in two minds over Anthony Martial's controversial red card for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur.

The United attacker saw red after a clash with Erik Lamela, which saw the Spurs attacker catch Martial with an elbow as the two tussled prior to a corner.

Martial subsequently palmed Lamela in the neck and the Spurs star dramatically fell to the ground.

Referee Anthony Taylor gave Martial a red card and Lamela off, leaving plenty of United fans fuming.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said that Martial was petulant but, if his was a red, Lamela's should have been too.

He said: "Martial doesn't have a leg to stand on in the sense that he’s petulant, he’s raised his hand to the face.

"He’s reacted to what Lamela’s done to him. I don’t think there’s much difference in what Lamela does and what Martial does.

"The forearm into the face or chin could have got Lamela in trouble, but Martial doesn’t."

Lamela was subsequently replaced by Lucas Moura at half-time, with Spurs 4-1 up.

Neville pointed to his escape of a red card as the reason Jose Mourinho opted to take the player off.

He said: "There's no doubt that Lamela is lucky to be on the pitch.

"Jose is smart enough to know that one more challenge and he's done, so he's brought Lucas Moura on."
