Gary Neville claims one takeover possibility will 'scare' Manchester United fans

Former captain Gary Neville believes the prospect of the Glazer family remaining part of Manchester United is something that will "scare fans".

The Glazers put the club on the market back in November and are open to both a full sale or fresh investment from elsewhere, though a full takeover is considered the more likely outcome, despite Avram and Joel Glazer having also considered buying out the shares of their other four siblings. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani submitted an official offer ahead of Friday night's 10pm 'soft deadline', as did British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Al Thani's bid was confirmed shortly before Friday night's cut-off point while confirmation of Ratcliffe's offer was made official on Saturday lunchtime. INEOS' statement confirming Ratcliffe's bid said that they want to secure a 'majority stake' in the club, sparking fears that the Glazers could still have some involvement if they win the bidding race.

However, it could be that INEOS' statement means they want all of the Glazers' shares, meaning they would secure full control. Nevertheless, Neville insists the Glazers still having any sort of control at the club is bad news for the fans.

"You've just said something that I think will scare Manchester United fans to death, and that is that the Glazer family are looking to stay in," said Neville, speaking to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic on Sky Sports.

"That is something that has been doing the rounds for a few months now, that Joel and Avi are using this process to drive the price up to get their brothers and sisters the best price, and them two stay in at the last minute with potentially a partner that wants them."
