Gary Neville apologises for his commentary during Burnley vs Manchester United

Gary Neville took to social media to issue an apology for his commentary during Manchester United's win at Burnley.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side moved top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over the Clarets thanks to a second-half volley from Paul Pogba.

It means United hold a three-point lead over title rivals Liverpool ahead of the two teams' meeting at Anfield on Sunday.

Neville, by his own admission, had an off night on co-commentary duty for the match.

Harry Maguire saw a header ruled out controversially by VAR, with contact appearing minimal on replays, as Neville said: "Maybe it's the arm on the back of the head. Maybe it's the elbow in the back, he's using it as you ordinarily would do for leverage."

Luke Shaw had moments earlier been the centre of attention in a bizarre first-half moment that saw the United left-back booked and Robbie Brady's caution rescinded following a double VAR check on possible red cards for both players.

"I think it's a foul definitely by Luke Shaw because he misses the ball and then follows through," Neville said. "I think he could be in trouble Luke Shaw looking at it again, because he actually puts his left leg out towards, but we'll see."

United fans on social media were particularly critical of Neville's take on the Shaw incident and Neville took to Twitter after the match to have his say.

"'Apologies for the commentary tonight," he wrote. "Stockley park all over the place, producer in my ear saying Salford have scored in the 92min and United gone top of the league! Delirious! I will be better Sunday."
