Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher compare Thiago to Man Utd legend for the wrong reasons

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have compared Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes due to his ability to foul.

The Spaniard joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in the summer for £20million - a bargain given his talents and wealth of experience.

But it's a been an odd start to his Liverpool career.

After recovering from Covid-19 and a knee problem the midfielder failed to find a win in four Premier League apperances.

Now with a couple of wins under his belt, a new trait has emerged - fouling.

Thiago has shown he's not been afraid to get stuck in and prior to the City fixture had two yellow cards to his name.

He added a third to his tally by bringing Ilkay Gundogun down inside just three minutes at Anfield.

His foul prompted comparisons from Sky Sports' commentary team of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

"There's been a lot of chat around Thiago," said Carragher. "What he brings. What he doesn't bring to this midfield. It's different.

"What he does bring is plenty of fouls. He's aggressive. Doesn't normally get it right. Paul Scholes like?"

Neville added : "Yeah he's turned his ankle there. The thing is with Thiago he's such a silky football player he almost gets away with that little naught aspect of his game.

"You mention Paul Scholes, there is a little bit of that in him because he makes a lot of fouls in the game.

"He's tenacious."

Carragher replied: "He does win that type of tackle at times but he's almost what we call, coming from the wrong side.

"Wrapping his leg around."

Scholes was of course known for putting in a challenge among many other quality attributes - such as passing and scoring from range.

Perhaps the comparisons are justified.
