Gary Lineker makes Leicester City claim amid Liverpool Champions League battle

Gary Lineker has claimed he would rather have seen Leicester City win the FA Cup than secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool have been in a battle with both Brendan Rodgers’ side and Chelsea for a place in next season’s competition.

Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over the Foxes on Tuesday night to move up to third place and one point ahead of their opponents at Stamford Bridge.

But the result also meant Thomas Tuchel’s side moved four points ahead of Liverpool and edged closer to securing Champions League football for next season.

The result at Stamford Bridge leaves Jurgen Klopp's side in fifth place, three points adrift of the top four with two games remaining.

Tuesday night’s game was a repeat of Saturday’s FA Cup final, which Rodgers’ side won 1-0 thanks to Youri Tielemans’ screamer.

And taking to Twitter after the game at the Bridge, Lineker claimed he would much rather see his side lift the FA Cup than finish in the top four.

“I know it doesn’t work like this, but if I’d have been given the choice of winning the FA Cup or getting a Champions League spot, I’d have taken the Cup all day long,” he wrote.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers said: “I've said all along we’ll see where we’re at after 38 games.

“In the last week, we’ve beaten the Europa League finalists and Champions League finalists, and won the FA Cup.

"Now we’ll recover and get ready for the weekend. All we can do is get three points there and see where it takes us.

"The maturity in the team and how they’ve fought has allowed us to get into this position.

“We know we can win big games, let’s see if we can do it again. It will be great because we've got supporters in.

"You could sense the difference fans made tonight, so that will make a big difference for us.

“For us, it’s about ourselves, we could never control what Liverpool or Chelsea has done. If we arrive in the top four, it will be a monumental effort.”
