Gary Lineker makes admission after Chelsea exact revenge on Leicester City

Chelsea put Saturday’s FA Cup final loss behind them on Tuesday night after they deservedly beat Leicester 2-1 at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho.

The win helped them move above Brendan Rodgers’ side to third in the Premier League table and they are now within touching distance of another season in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, a loss for Leicester means that the race to secure Champions League qualification has got that little bit tougher. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are now just three points behind the Midlands club and they have a game in hand, meaning it could all go down to goal difference on the last day.

With the fear of dropping out of the top four in mind, Gary Lineker tweeted: “I know it doesn’t work like this, but if I’d have been given the choice of winning the FA Cup or getting a Champions League spot, I’d have taken the Cup all day long.”

It’s fair to say that that admission isn’t entirely surprising, especially when you consider how close the Foxes have come to winning the FA Cup in the past, losing at the final stage on four occasions. It was the one they wanted and therefore was a landmark win in their long history.

Perhaps not every Leicester fan will agree with Lineker, mainly given that a Champions League place all-but confirms your status as one of European’s elite clubs – well at least it used to before the attempted European Super League – but that day will live long in their memory, whilst Chelsea fans will regret a missed opportunity for more silverware.
