Gary Lineker delivers strong verdict on FSG after Liverpool reverse furlough decision

Gary Lineker has defended Liverpool's owners' decision to backtrack on furloughing club staff.

On Saturday the club had announced they were set to place all non-playing employees on the Government's job retention scheme.

This controversial decision was met with outcry from a lot of supporters, and in response to this on Monday evening Liverpool announced they had reversed the decision and would no longer be placing staff on furlough.

A statement from Liverpool CEO Peter Moore explained how the club were "truly sorry" for what many had deemed a misstep.

This was met with widespread support from the Reds' fanbase, and Gary Lineker has commented on FSG's decision to backtrack.

Responding to a tweet by The Independent, of an article by Tony Evans, which said: "In a crisis Liverpool’s owners failed the club and their fans – changing their minds doesn’t change that."

The Match of the Day host admitted he disagreed with that particular viewpoint, as he replied: "Disagree.

"Everyone makes the odd bad decision. Recognising a mistake and putting it right is something to applaud."

Lineker is not the first to show his support for FSG's re-evaluation. Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher admitted his delight at the decision.

He told Sky Sports: "They embarrassed themselves and they embarrassed their own supporters.

"I’m delighted that they’ve changed their mind, they had to change their mind, I’m glad they saw sense.

"They’ve actually made mistakes before, in terms of ticket pricing, there was something where they tried to trademark the name Liverpool, and what they’ve also done, and credit to them, they pull back on it. That was always my hope."
