Gary Kubiak named coach of Denver Broncos

Jan. 19--This past weekend's worst-kept secret has been made official: Gary Kubiak is the new coach of the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos announced Kubiak's hiring Monday, a week after they parted ways with coach John Fox in the wake of a disappointing loss to Indianapolis Colts in the AFC divisional playoffs. Fox was hired as the Chicago Bears head coach on Friday.

Kubiak, 53, is expected to be formally introduced as the team's coach during a news conference in Denver on Tuesday. His new deal with the Broncos is for four years, according to multiple reports.

Kubiak spent this past season as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator after he was fired in 2013 following eight seasons as the head coach of the Houston Texans. He compiled a 61-64 regular-season record with the Texans and guided them to the playoffs in 2011 and 2012.

Prior to coaching, Kubiak played as a quarterback in Denver for nine seasons during the 1980s and '90s, serving as a backup to his new boss, John Elway, Broncos executive vice president of football operations and general manager.

"Gary Kubiak has established a track record of leadership, success and high character during his 30 seasons in the NFL," Elway said in a statement. "While there is no question he is a Bronco, what Gary has learned from his other opportunities around the league -- especially in his eight seasons as a head coach -- will tremendously benefit our organization."

Kubiak's main goal will be turning the Broncos into Super Bowl winners. Denver made the Super Bowl in 2014, but its playoff loss this season coupled with differences among the team's front office and the coaching staff prompted the Broncos to bring in a new coach.

Whether Kubiak will have 14-time Pro Bowl selection Peyton Manning at his disposal next season remains to be seen.
