Gartcairn win West League One title after Shotts Bon Accord slip-up

Gartcairn were crowned West League One champions – without kicking a ball.

The Airdrie juniors ended their season two weeks ago and sat top of the table, but could still have been pipped to the title by North Lanarkshire rivals Shotts Bon Accord if they won their game in hand against Blantyre Victoria.

However, in a dramatic afternoon at Hannah Park, Blantyre held on to seal a 4-3 win and hand Cairn the title.

Boss Jamie McKenzie said: “We knew that Blantyre are a good team and when I heard they were 4-1 up we were able to start celebrating a bit.

Airdrieonians Q&A as DoF opens up on Ian Murray, Chris O'Neil, fan rows and escaping League One

“A few of the boys went down to watch the game and gave us updates. Our goalkeeper KP McAllister was messaging the boys and giving us updates.

“With 20 minutes to go I was thinking that it was over, but fair play to Shotts for fighting until the end.”

He continued: “We have been top since the first day and are now champions, I’m not sure if you asked too many other managers there would be many complaints.

“John (McKeown) at Shotts was one of the first to congratulate me by text. Full credit to him for that, because he must have been hurting .”
