Gareth Southgate makes Harry Maguire prediction after defender's world-record Man United move

Gareth Southgate has talked up Harry Maguire's prospects at Manchester United and wouldn't be surprised if the defender is the club's best player this season.

The Englishman has enjoyed a strong start to life at Old Trafford following his world-record £80m from Leicester City in the summer.

The former Sheffield United and Hull City centre-back has worked his way up the leagues and excelled at every level.

However, moving to the Red Devils is a completely new pressure for Maguire but one Southgate is excited to see his defender play in - especially given his high price tag.

Maguire has been one of the first names on the team sheet under Southgate, with his modern-day ball-playing skills playing a massive part in his role for England.

When asked whether he had any doubts whether Maguire can adapt at United, Southgate brushed away any doubt his ability to raise his game.

Speaking to ITV ahead of England's EURO 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria, the Three Lions boss said: "He'll be fine. He'll be absolutely fine.

"I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of the season he isn't their (Manchester United) player.

"He'll relish it. Why wouldn't it give you confidence that Manchester United are prepared to pay £80m for you?

"Playing in matches where the expectation is really high and the scrutiny is really high. That's the difference."
