Gareth Southgate admits England interest in Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson

Gareth Southgate says Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson are two players England are interested in.

The two Newcastle midfielders can play for both Scotland and England due to the dual nationality rule, with both of their futures still up in the air.

Anderson was in Steve Clarke's squad for the fixtures against Cyprus and Southgate's side but pulled out through injury.

Barnes has one cap for England after he featured in a friendly against Wales in 2020.

And the Three Lions boss has admitted both men are on his radar.

He said: "Both are very good players. In terms of Harvey, he is a player who has played for us. We have a lot of competition in that area of the pitch.

"He's a player we are always monitoring and a player we like a lot. With Elliot, again, I think he's a player who has progressed really well.

"We have previously spoken with him but he was named in the squad here so I assumed that was that.

"I thought he had an excellent pre-season with Newcastle. I don't know the answer to the ultimate question for either player but there are going to be more and more of these situations.

"There are so many players with dual or triple nationality now and it is very complicated for every country. Sometimes you can't offer the player something as quickly as they'd like.

"We have benefitted from it and lost players because of it, and I think that is always going to be the case."
