Gardai are investigating after a bakery in Castlebar was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday.
According to the shop owner, Bernie Campbell, the culprit came into the shop just after she had gone out for a few minutes and had a mask on and hood up.
Her 24-year-old daughter was in Cake My Day on Hopkins Road on her own when he arrived and had to hand over a sum of money to the knife-wielding man.
Ms. Campbell says although he was disguised, they do have some form of a description of him that gardai are working with, and officers are confident they will find him.
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported during the incident, and “investigations are ongoing,” according to An Garda Siochana.
Speaking to Midwest Radio this morning, Ms. Campbell said: “You get so many lovely customers and people are coming in and out and you know for me growing up in Castlebar, I would never really feel unsafe or expect something like this to happen.

“So I think it was a shock really that somebody would do that to a baker or to anyone, I think that was just a big shock and the fact that he had a knife, that was so scary.”
The shop owner said her daughter was alone working in the shop at the time of the robbery and explained: “I had just nipped out and I’d say I was gone less than ten minutes and basically I missed him by about two seconds - apparently he had just left the shop when I had got back.
“She kept her cool, but she collapsed than really when he was gone, and she was shaking and crying and I think the whole shock of what could have happened kind of hit her.”
Gardai confirmed to the Irish Mirror that they “are investigating an incident of a robbery that occurred at a retail premises on the 22nd December 2021 at 4.07 pm in Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
“A sum of cash was taken from the premises, but no injuries have been reported at this time.”
