Garda warning as hundreds turned away from beaches in Co Wicklow after travelling up to 160km

Gardai issued a warning as more than 100 cars were turned home from beaches in Co Wicklow for allegedly breaking coronavirus travel restrictions.

Officers in the county turned back motorists in both Magheramore and Brittas Bay on Thursday amid the beautiful weather on the hottest day of the year.

Government regulations state that non-essential journeys of over 5km must be avoided.

However gardai said some cars were coming from as far afield as Dublin and Dundalk in Co Louth, which is nearly 160km away from Brittas Bay.

And more than 40 drivers were issued with fixed charge notices for parking their vehicles illegally.

Gardai warned that anyone travelling more than 5km to visit these beaches over the Bank Holiday will be turned home.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí at Magheramore and Brittas Bay today turned back more than 100 cars with people having travelled from places like Clonee, Dundalk and all parts of Dublin.

"More than 40 fixed charge notices were issued for illegal parking.

"We would ask that people do not travel to these locations.

"We will be trying our best to keep these areas clear over the coming weekend and checkpoints will be carried out.

"Avoid being made turn around and just stay away. If you are within 5km, please continue to socially distance and dispose of gloves/masks properly."
