Gangster ‘CD’ Mani was arrested by the police after a dramatic chase when he attempted to escape after firing at the police and jumped from a bridge in Porur.
Police said that P. Manikandan alias 'CD' Mani has more than 30 criminal cases for offences including kidnap, extortion at gunpoint, attempt to murder and murder. Police said he was wanted criminal and non-bailable warrants are pending against him.
City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal said, “CD Mani is a history-sheeter in the Teynampet range, involved in many criminal cases for offences, including murder. He has cases for usage of illegal firearms, causing public disturbance and extortion. He was absconding for long and we were searching for him.”
"When we checked at his house in Kelambakkam, he was not there. However, our men spotted him moving in a sedan and a special team of police personnel tried to stop him. He opened fire — two rounds from an unlicensed pistol on our police team — which was purchased from Bihar, our preliminary investigation revealed. A sub-inspector Balakrishnan had injuries on his shoulder as bullets grazed it. “
He added, “Then he took to his heels and our personnel followed him. Our special team chased him further. As he jumped off a bridge, he was injured on the leg and arm. He was apprehended and taken to hospital as per procedure.”
Talking to reporters after visiting police personnel , the Commissioner said: "I want to drive home the point that there is no place for rowdy elements in the city and as far as police are concerned, it is not "trigger happy" police. But we have certain powers for self defence and to take maximum action against rowdy elements who go out of control. “
The Commissioner also said there is prima facie evidence on the allegation made in a complaint lodged by a woman actor against former minister M.Manikandan and steps were taken to record the statement of the complainant soon. He also added that the police would oppose anticipatory bail petition moved by the former minister in the court.
Meanwhile, Parthasarathy, father of Mani, lodged a complaint with Kelambakkam police, Chengalpattu district alleging that on Tuesday, around 10 persons came to his house in Pudupattinam and took Mani forcibly from the house. He did not return home and there was no further information on his whereabouts. His father sought Kelambakkam Police to trace him.
