GameStop says these beloved gaming consoles are ‘officially retro’

  • GameStop officially declared the Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii U as "officially retro consoles" or "historic artifacts" in a playful social media statement.
  • The classification was based on factors like the presence of component cables, the absence of Fortnite, and their launch during George W. Bush's presidency.
  • To mark this, GameStop introduced a "Retro Trade-In Bonus" until March 21, offering an extra 10 percent trade-in credit for these and older consoles, games, and accessories, even if defective but still able to power on.
  • Despite GameStop's reassurance that these systems are "still very cool" and their owners "absolutely not old," the announcement prompted many millennials to express feeling old on social media.
  • This declaration comes as GameStop continues to face significant store closures, having shuttered nearly 500 locations by the end of January and 580 last year, reducing its total to fewer than 2,000 stores nationwide.
