Game of Thrones-inspired baby names sees huge surge in recent years

The popularity of Game of Thrones means you are increasingly likely to find a little Arya, Sansa, or Eddard in your local nursery.

With the show returning for its final series on Monday, figures show it is inspiring some parents in their choice of name for their new baby.

According to the National Records Scotland, Arya is the most popular inspiration. Between 2011, when the series first started airing, and 2017 - the most recent figures - 213 girls across Scotland were given the name.

It’s also been increasing in popularity, with the name given to 48 girls in 2017, compared to four in 2011. Arya is now the 98th most popular name in Scotland.

Over the period, 17 baby girls were given the name Khaleesi. There has also been a Khaleesi-Destiny and a Khaleesi-Grace. Since the series began, there has been one girl named Sansa, four named Catelyn, one named Brienne, and one named Ellaria.

Game of Thrones-inspired boys names were also popular - since 2011, there has been a total of five Theons.

There's also been three baby boys named Bran, two named Sandor, four named Khal, two each called Robb and Jorah, and one Eddard. And although he may not be the most likeable character out there, there have also been 69 babies named Ramsay.

Plans for 106 new houses, nature garden and playground approved for Glasgow’s east end

The show does feature some more conventional names, so babies given these names may not have Game of Thrones fans for parents.

Since 2011, there have been two Neds, and 28 Jons, as well as eight boys named Jaime and 13 girls named Shae.
