Galway GAA sponsors Supermac's demand details of spending

Galway GAA sponsors Supermac's have demanded the county board detail how almost €1.6m in funding has been spent.

The fast food chain, founded by Galway native Pat McDonagh, has sponsored the county's teams since 2015.

But they released a statement this evening calling on the county board to release details of their finances.

The statement read: "Supermac’s would like to seek clarification from the Galway County Board as to how this money was spent. Specifically, have the players and management benefitted or has the county board benefitted?"

Supermac's detailed that in five years of sponsorship they have ploughed €1.25m in direct payments plus over €340,000 in ancillary sponsorship into Galway's county teams.

But concerns over spending saw GAA authorities and accounting firm Mazars brought in to examine their books.

And at a meeting in December last - officers expenses of €45,000, a debt of €390,000 to Croke Park for All-Ireland final tickets and the use of an official credit card for personal expenses - were among the revelations.

The statement continued: "Supermac’s raised financial concerns with the Galway County Board 4 years ago.

"Supermac’s understands that 2 investigations have taken place into the finances of Galway GAA; One conducted by Galway GAA and a second conducted by Mazars.

"Supermac’s is calling for these investigations to be made public immediately.

"The vast majority of the Galway GAA public and mentors, who give their time voluntarily for the promotion and administration of our games and the welfare of our players, deserve no less."
