Galloway National Park campaigners put up banners to promote project during Tour of Britain

Galloway National Park campaigners are looking to hitch a publicity ride from the Tour of Britain cycle race.

Roadside banners are being put up along the route through the Glenkens to Kirkcudbright ahead of Saturday’s stage one spectacular.

They carry the message “Help us make Galloway Scotland’s Third National Park”.

An invitation to join or donate also features.

The initiative is the latest in a series of moves to raise awareness of the campaign.

Galloway National Park Association trustee Lesley Grindley said: “We are trying to increase our profile throughout the region.

“We are getting posters out for local people and visitors.

“The main reason we are doing this is so people can get actively involved and support us.

“There is so much going on politically at the moment and we want to let people know things have not stopped and that we are working hard.”

A membership drive also forms part of efforts to broaden the campaign’s appeal, Ms Grindley said.

“Our stall at the recent Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail was very busy.

“We were there for two days and we picked up a lot of new members.

“We have more than doubled our membership since March of this year and are now approaching 600 members.

“We are building up a really good support.”

Rural affairs and natural environment minister Mairi Gougeon has agreed to a further meeting with association representatives later this year.

The GNPA is petitioning the Scottish Government to launch a full public consultation on creating a Galloway National Park.

Should the bid ultimately succeed Galloway would become Scotland’s third national park.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs was established in 2002 and the Cairngorms a year later.
