Gallant Thais fall short again in Macau

Thailand suffered their second loss in Pool 7 of the FIVB Nations League in Macau on Wednesday.

The Thai team, captained by Pluemjit Thinkaow, went down to China 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-17) at the Macau Forum.

They pushed the Chinese hard in each of the three losing sets but found Lang Ping's team too consistent in key moments.

Thailand have just one win against four losses so far in the tournament.

Serbia, who beat Thailand 3-1 on Tuesday, claimed their second pool win and their fourth in the tournament after beating Poland 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-15).

Thailand play Poland in the final pool game on Thursday at 4.30pm.

In Pool 5, United States handed Netherlands their first loss of the tournament in Toyota, Japan.

The Americans blanked the previously unbeaten Dutch team 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23).

Hosts Japan, who lost to the US on Tuesday, bounced back with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) win over Belgium.

Meanwhile Italy beat Germany 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-20), while hosts South Korea defeated Russia 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-17) in Pool 6 action in Suwon.

Kim Yeon-Koung had another standout game as the Koreans recorded a rare victory over Russia as the home team notched their fourth straight victory of the campaign.

The inspirational captain was at her brilliant best throughout the encounter, particularly during the tense third set to provide plenty of cheer for the local fans.

In Ankara, Brazil beat Argentina 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-14) in Pool 8 for their fourth win of the campaign.

Hosts Turkey were due to play Dominican Republic in the second game later last night.

The 2018 FIVB Women's Nations League, a new annual international tournament contested by 16 teams, replaces the former World Grand Prix.

The teams are divided into four pools of four teams and will play five straight weeks in the league rounds. The top five teams will then join hosts China in the final round.
